(The row over Holocaust denial and the Roman Catholic church has developed another twist, with allegations that the priestly society at the heart of the controversy is itself anti-semitic. The church had sought to distance itself from the views expressed a member of the society, the British-born Bishop Richard Williamson. But now a Jewish news organisation says it has evidence that the priestly society as a whole condones anti-semitism. Our religious affairs correspondent Christopher Landau reports. )

At the height of the controversy over Bishop Richard Williamson’s holocaust denial, there was no delay from his superiors in condemning his comments. Bernard Fellay, the head of the Priestly Society of Saint Pius the Tenth, said that the bishop’s views did not reflect “in any sense” the views of the society as a whole. But research by a Jewish news organisation appears to undermine that claim. A team of journalists based in Belgium have analysed material on various official websites belonging to the religious society. Their conclusion is that the society “propagates the worst kind of anti-Semitism”.

Their allegations are supported by links to websites that accuse Jews of being the founders of communism, and the enemy of man. A South African site speaks of a Jewish aim of “world dominion”; other sites feature questions about whether Jews are guilty of murdering God. The relationship between Roman Catholics and Jews improved considerably following the Second Vatican Council of the 1960s, which rejected a blanket condemnation of Jewish people. But the Priestly Society of Saint Pius the Tenth rejects many of the council’s reforms. The pope’s decision to invite the society back into the mainstream Catholic fold had angered progressive Catholics even before the row over anti-semitism. Now there seem to be yet further questions for the church to answer.

BBC broadcast on the World Briefing programme on Friday 21/2 and Saturday 22/2.
